The Recent EU Ban on Fluorescents means a Bright Future for Sustainable Lighting and a Growing Circular Economy.
New EU Industry standards are coming fast and furious to deal with the climate crisis.
Light Solutions’ David Vaughan, represents the LAI (the Lighting Association of Ireland: the voice of the lighting profession in Ireland), one of the member groups who sit on Lighting Europe’s Steering Group.
Lighting Europe, which represents the European lighting industry, promotes engagement and best practice between the European Commission and industry. These bodies are kept up to speed with any relevant EU regulations that will directly impact the lighting industry across Europe.
The most recent pivotal shift for the lighting industry was the EU’s adoption of 12 regulations, under the RoHS Directive, to ban the sales of toxic fluorescent lamps from September 1stt. This is part of the EU’s commitment to reduce emissions by at least 55% by 2030. This ban means that any T5/T8 bulbs that break or reach end-of-life cannot be replaced.
Replaceable LEDs are the only viable option, they are a key solution to shifting from a disposable society and contributing to the circular economy. They are 95% recyclable, they last five times longer than traditional fluorescent bulbs, produce the same amount of light but use 80% less power, thus saving you money while saving the planet.
With 40% of the Industrial / Commercial sector still using fluorescent lighting in Ireland, it’s time to get ahead of the curve, by switching to LED in good time and avoid rising costs!
At Light Solutions, we are experts in LED retrofit solutions and actively promote the circular economy by supplying luminaires and upgrade solutions, where both parts are replaceable and recyclable. We work in line with the recent TM66 Assured Product Verification Scheme. This innovative initiative developed and fulfilled by the Lighting Industry Association (LIA) and endorsed by CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) aims to advance circular economy practices within the lighting industry.

At Light Solutions, we can develop innovative LED bespoke kit solutions, which can, if possible, be installed into your existing luminaires.
One such LED retrofit project, which we successfully delivered, was at Goldsmith Hall Accommodation at Trinity College. We engaged directly with the client to keep the original luminaires we supplied six years previous. All parts of the luminaires were replaceable and interchangeable We installed innovative LED kit solutions into the existing luminaires, thus reducing waste, client cost, while contributing to the circular economy.
